Prizegiving 2008 race |
During the open day of our sponsor Kemper & Van Twist the IRC cup of the Lombardini Marine 1000-mile DH race was handed over to proud winner Kees de Walle, skipper of Fandango. He received the cup from host and sponsor Rob de Wijs in company of competitors of this years race. Race organiser Jules Bänffer interviewed the winner ánd fellow competitors to give an idea about the race to the present visitors of the open day.
In this years 1000-mile DH race Fandango was unbeatable. She won all five legs on IRC. Skipper De Walle and his co skippers worked hard for their victory: "When I'm sailing a race, I look for the limits of me, my co-skipper and my ship. After a couple of days offshore you have found these limits and have to work very hard to keep them high. I have pushed my crew and myself to find the energy for every sailchange and tactical move. I am proud of the result!".
In next years 1000-mile DH race, Fandango will be thé boat to beat. Everyone who dares this challenge, should join the race!

Overall results after leg 4 |
While Fandango, Jager, Vijaya, Le Tournesol and Lion King are still on their way to Stavanger in leg 5, the overall winner cannot be moved from his thrown anymore. After an increadible steady race with the best results every leg, the race committee is proud to pronounce that Fandango is the Overall winner of the Lombardini Marine 1000-mile Doublehanded Race!
On his website the winning skipper Kees de Walle reports:
"The fourth leg was superb. We were first again and have worked hard for it. Because of the showers it was a constant change between gennaker and genua 3. We took the max out of it and could reach a topspeed of 17.07 knots!"
A great video of Fandango in leg 4 can be watched online!

Change of race! |
Due to the postponed fourth leg the race committee has decided to change the fifth leg of the Lombardini 1000-mile Doublehanded Race. Most competitors have to be back home this weekend after three weeks sailing. We have spoken about a couple of options of which one was to skip the fifth leg. Luckily the 1000-mile racers are tough competitors who want to do what they came for. The fifth leg will be sailed! Tomorrow morning (June 25th) at 09:00 o'clock (CET) five yachts will race 90 nm. from Bergen to Stavanger. The finish in Stavanger will be the finish of this year's 1000 mile race.
The race committee regrets this situation, especially for the people in Newcastle. After leg 1 our competitors have been treated like VIP's over there.

1000mile.org greets online competitors! |
While the remaining eight yachts of the Lombardini Marine 1000-mile Doublehanded Race started the fourth leg in Lerwick this afternoon, 259 online sailors switched on their computers to sail the same leg online! The big difference: where our 16 sailors are now on the Northsea challenging wind, water, 10 degrees and weariness, the online sailors sit in their lazy chair, in about 22 degrees and a cold beer. Still, the race committee welcomes this new group of 1000-mile competitors. We're proud to grow from 8 to 250+ participants!

Fandango wins again! |
Last year's runner up is working hard to be this years champion: Fandango doesn't give anything away. With their third IRC win in three legs we wonder which one of the competitors can beat skipper Kees de Walle and co-skipper Elvira Luykx. Of course anything is possible, but when Fandango wins the fourth leg again, they will definitely be the overall winners of the Lombardini Marine 1000-mile Doublehanded Race 2008!
The Line Honours of leg 3 went to Wolfies Toy. They sailed from Bergen to Lerwick just under 24 hours (23:48:30) and were the fastest yacht in the Bergen Shetland races to race the track.

Line honours leg 2: a big surprise! |
Last Thursday the 1000-mile fleet started in Newcastle for the 400+ miles to Bergen. Hayai stayed in Newcastle, because skipper Nico Budel has other (solo) plans in the south of England. Unfortunately Meka II has also retired from the race.
The second leg has been totally different than the first. We will tell you the stories of the competitors later, but the Line Honours tell a story of it's own. A Dehler 39 (Greyhound) has won from an open 50 (Wolfies Toy) on line honour.

Fighting for line honours in leg 1 |
It was a close finish yesterday afternoon. The two fastest boats of the fleet had to work very hard to cross the finishline in Newcastle first. With a time difference of only 12 minutes after 260 nm, the Belgian open 50 Wolfies Toy took the Line Honours just before Nico Budel's open 40 Hayai. The third boat to cross the finishline was Greyhound. The last yacht, Le Tournesol, arrived in Newcastle 24 hrs later than Wolfies Toy.
IRC winner
With baskets full of Newcastle specialties, the harbourmaster treated the 1000-mile competitors during the prize giving. The most important prize went to Fandango, by winning leg 1 on IRC handicap. Runner up is Greyhound, followed by Jager.
The first leg was one the competitors will not easily forget. During the 260 nm. all weatherconditions passed by: fog, sun, rain, wind (changing from 0 to 25 knots coming from all directions) and changing temperatures. From sailing with reefed mainsail and high aspect to full main under spinaker to rowing with all sails down. That can only happen during the Lombardini Marine 1000 mile Doublehanded Race...

Afternoon dip and halfway point reached |
In the first night on the Northsea most yachts reached speeds up to seven knots, untill this morning... All competitors reached an airless area off the coast of England where all ten yachts could not make any progress by sail anymore. Although we did not have contact with the fleet, it could have happened that some competitors did use their oars to row through the windless area. This special rule is permitted in the Lombardini Marine 1000-mile Doublehanded Race. In last year's edition some boats did use their oars and could reach speeds up to 2,5 knots, so it can make a difference!
This late afternoon Wolfies Toy was the first to reach the 130 mile distance to Newcastle. By reaching that point they are halfway leg 1. Unfortunately it seems that Hajay's tracker has some problems, because she is still not making progress from the airless area. Wolfies Toy (open 50) and Hajay (open 40) are the two fastest boats in the fleet and both sailing to win the line honours.

Off they go! |
With just a bit of wind and a view of only 500 meter, this year's Lombardini Marine 1000-mile Doublehanded Race has started! Ten yachts were on the startline off the coast of Scheveningen this morning. The first yacht to round the upwind buoy was Vijaya. A good start, but with about 260 miles to go only time will tell if their start was good enough to win this leg. In last year's edition the IRC results were very close. Sometimes the difference was less than one minute between the competitors.
Visitors of this website can follow the competitors online. Every two hours the trackers on board send data to the race chart.

Historic starting vessel |
|
Like last year, the beautiful historic lifeboat JohannaLouisa of the Dutch Sea Rescue Organization will be our starting vessel.
This former lifeboat has saved the lives of many sailors in distress in the
period 1969 to 1993. Of course we hope this old lady will only be used to start
the first leg of the 1000 mile race next Sunday...

Hayai in the race |
The race committee welcomes the latest entry in the 1000-mile DH Race, Hayai. Skipper Nico Budel has competed successfully in races like the Ostar, Round Britain and Ireland, Petit Bateau and Fastnet. With the entry Hayai, the total number of entries adds up to 19 yachts from The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and UK. Six of them have sailed the 1000-mile DH race last year. If that will be an advantage, we will see in a couple of weeks…

Lia Ditton wants to sail 1000 miles ... with you! |
Route du Rhum and Ostar sailor Lia Ditton wants to
join the Lombardini Marine 1000 Mile Race. The problem is that she does
not have a yacht for the race. For that reason she is very interested
to co-skipper with one of the competitors. When you are looking for an
experienced ocean sailor, write an e-mail to the race committee and
tell us why Lia has to join you on the 1000 mile Doublehanded.

No speed records during 50 Mile Doublehanded |
The
2nd edition of the 50 Mile Doublehanded Race on the Dutch IJsselmeer
was held on 19 April under light weather conditions. During the race
the winds did not climb above 10 knots. Still, the winner, the trimaran
Trigger, only needed 6:35:50 hours for the 50 miles. The last boat
crossed the finish line in 11:27:02 hours. Nineteen of the
seventy-seven competitors could not be patient enough to handle the
light winds and did not cross the finish line under sail.
Almost the entire race committee of the 1000 Mile
Doublehanded joined the race and was impressed by the tough competition
and great sailing of many participants. We hope that some of them will
join the 100 and 1000 mile doublehanded races.

Initiatiefnemers 1000 mijl Doublehanded bezoeken hoofdsponsor |

Belamarin AS, the Norwegian Raymarine importer has agreed to sponsor. |
1000-Mile DH Race competitors wil be tracked by Inmarsat devices. The legs
between Bergen en Lerwick will also be tracked via DCS VHF and
positions will be presented on the Shetland-Bergen Races website. In
order to get the positions the DSC VHF on board must be suitable for
'position polling'.
If your VHF is
not, Belamarin has an extremely attractive offer on a modern VHF radio,
supporting digital selective calling (DSC) with "position poll". The
model offered is Raymarine Ray 55E.
Telenor Maritim Radio (they are responsible for the polling) have
tested and verified this models "position poll" against their systems.
Participants (whose yacht must be confirmed on the entry
list) can purchase the Ray 55E for the exceptionally low price of 95
EUR (incl VAT). The remaining costs are subsidised by Belamarin and
Telenor Maritim Radio. The retail value of the Ray 55E is EUR 509,- ,
so this offer should be very attractive! Alternatively, race
participants can buy a more sophisticated model, the Ray 218E, for EUR 310. Retail value is EUR 708,-
Note: one unit only per yacht!
The Race Committee will coordinate VHF orders. Send a mail with your yachts name plus which VHF model you want to buy.

Greetings from Shetland! |
|
We in Shetland look forward to welcoming sailors in the 2008 Sjøassistanse Shetland - Bergen Races to the isles this summer.
The international Races add to a wonderful weekend of colour in Lerwick. It is heartening to see new yachts entering the Races as well as old friends visiting again. The 1000-mile yachts starting from Holland are reviving a long history of boats from there calling at Lerwick for Johnsmas.
The 2008 Johnsmas Foy in Shetland starts on 19 June and this year will celebrate Hanseatic links - a very fitting theme for visitors from Bergen, one of the main cities in the Hanseatic league.
I look forward to seeing you all at Victoria Pier at Lerwick during the Flavour of Shetland event that will take place over the Races weekend.
Hopefully you will find a small taste of Shetland there to enjoy.
With best wishes for a good Race,
Sandy Cluness
Convener
